While the terms partnership and collaboration are hardly new in the nonprofit lexicon, the practice of engaging creatively across the private, public and nonprofit sectors is more important than ever for achieving organizational goals and social change.

This course will explore the benefits and risks associated with partnerships and collaborations, and examine innovative models and strategies through case studies and best practices.

This intensive five-week course explores the following topics:

  • Partnerships and Collaboration across the Sectors: Drivers, Definitions and Determinants
  • Collaboration among Nonprofits
  • Local and State Government – Nonprofit Partnerships and Collaboration
  • Private Sector – Nonprofit Partnerships and Collaboration
  • The Blending and Blurring of the Sectors

Learning Outcomes

What you and your organization will gain from this course:

  • Ability to define partnerships and collaboration and explain the rationale for nonprofit engagement in such initiatives with government and the corporate sector.
  • Recognition of the characteristics of effective collaboration and steps toward achieving it.
  • Identification of a wide range of collaborative activities that nonprofits are utilizing today with other nonprofits.
  • Understanding of the purpose and benefits of local government-nonprofit partnerships and collaboration through analysis of case studies.
  • Familiarity with types of nonprofit-business collaboration and the ways that both partners can benefit from P&C initiatives.
  • Understanding of the ways in which all three sectors are evolving in directions that challenge traditional roles and functions in contemporary society.

  • Small class size with a maximum of 25 participants

This is an instructor-led course delivered entirely online. It is highly interactive and requires active participation on discussion boards and completion of assigned projects. There are no real-time class meetings. Students work at times that are convenient for them within the weekly schedule of activities. We estimate spending an average of 8 – 10 hours per week on each Certificate in Nonprofit Management course. For this reason, we highly recommend students participate in no more than two CNM courses at a time.
